'Snow joke, this marathon training!

Season’s greetings!

Well, the snow may not have arrived yet but the competition should be feeling a chill down their spine as Rosie and Steve go through their exercise routines…

And, most important of all, today marks day 1 of the fundraising campaign! You can now donate online via http://www.justgiving.com/steveandrosiemarathon2012

Rosie is edging ahead in terms of distance at around 10 miles, however Steve takes the prize for variety of locations as he has been spotted running through the woods in Belgium! Wait – it all makes sense now: the frequent international travel… the bizarre love of Andy McNab stories… and now the marathon as ‘cover’ for intensive commando-style training? Readers, I am sure that Steve’s ‘Bourne’ identity cannot remain a secret for much longer…

Somewhere, along a lonely woodland trail in Belgium, Steve puts his SAS training to the test...

Divorced from reality...

Welcome back, my friends! What have you been up to? So much has happened since we last spoke. Political turmoil, economic upheaval, violence and protest, floods and earthquakes… and, of course, the announcement by reality TV star Kim Kardashian of her intention to divorce basketball-star second husband Kris Humphries…

Hold up! You mean you didn’t know? Kris Humphries proposed with a 20.5-carat ring by spelling out "Will you marry me?" in rose petals. 72 days after their very lucrative televised wedding, Kardashian had second thoughts and sent a mass email to her family and friends informing them of her divorce plans, which they kindly forwarded to Kris… VIA THE WHOLE WORLD!!! I know; I can’t believe it either. Rose petals? But I digress…

Steve and Rosie have been hitting the trail hard. Here come the stats…

Over the last 92 days they clocked up 115 miles over 22.13 hours, an average speed of 5.2 miles per hour and 1.25 miles per day. Phew! Enough stats…

In a statement that would make Ernest Hemingway’s sentences look flabby and John Wayne verbose, Steve told me “I need to ramp up distance and time.” I’m not sure if this was an expression of cosmological significance or just a matter-of-fact concession of the wish to up the ante on the training…

Please leave messages and greetings on this blog as you see fit. This is your blog. Until next time my dear, dear friends!

And so it begins...

2500 years after Pheidippides ran all the way from Marathon to Athens to announce the defeat of the Persians by the Greeks, a father and daughter from the great Thames Valley in England's green and pleasant land, or 'Broken Britain' as you know it today, decided that they would rather like to take on this ultimate endurance challenge.

The arena in which these two young hopefuls will test their mettle and push their bodies to the limit will be the London Marathon, on the 22nd April 2012. As of today they have 189 days in which to prepare themselves. Thanks to the wonders of the internet, you can follow the twists and turns, highs and lows of their progress as it happens. Pheidippides never had the chance to tweet live updates on the battle of Marathon - but then, if he had, he wouldn't have had to run all the way to bloody Athens, died of exhaustion, and set the stage for the world's most famous fitness test. But I digress...

And so back to the present. On a sunny morning in October, Rosie Carr and her father Steve took their marathon legs for a spin at the Dulwich 10k. Rosie had prepared by eating balanced carbohydrates, drinking plenty of water, and getting plenty of rest (with the odd glass of Shiraz thrown in for good measure, lest I paint Rosie in an overly ascetic light); Steve, however, had taken a less sensible but more red blooded approach, possibly harking back to the Dionysian pleasures our man in ancient Greece might have enjoyed after the victory over the Persians, had he lived. May the Gods bless him. But I digress...

Steve's week consisted of dancing, singing, swilling red wine and gorging on roast meats until the early hours, before rising at dawn to deliver a barrage of informative and compelling presentations, and flying home to Blighty just hours before the race... Will he dare to laugh in the face of the Gods in this way come Marathon day? Friends, stay tuned to their blog to find out.

Until next time...

The team's first outing: no blood, few tears, but plenty of sweat!
