TEAM CARR IN TRIUMPHANT MARATHON DEBUT

On a drizzly but euphoric end to a 26.2 mile slog, our heroes limped over the line, smiling (and many weren't!) but shattered. With 4 witnesses, photographic and video evidence, and chip timing, you can be sure we're not having you on...

Stick a fork in me, I'm done: Rosie and Steve complete their first marathon.

The team clocked in at 6 hours, 50 minutes and 38 seconds, placing 35,977 and 35,979 respectively. One wonders who came in at 35,978, elbowing between our heroic duo in a last desperate attempt to improve their ranking - it must be that woman in red you can see in the video. Or did Steve surge ahead at the last minute in true 'competitive dad' style, leaving poor Rosie to haul her exhausted legs over the finish line?

Now the drugs don't work: Steve looks a little jaded at mile 5 but Rosie's smile keeps the team motivated.

Not so grim up north: Rosie's boyfriend Rich brings his irrepressible enthusiasm
 to the proceedings.

Wired but tired: Rosie described a strange combination of sugar high in the top half of the body and legs of stone as she completed her ordeal. Steve's response was unprintable...

Re-tox diet: Rosie and Steve are reunited with sofas, bottles of red and chinese takeaways after living like buddhist monks for four months.

So there you have it! We will post again with the final fundraising total soon. In the meantime:

Thank you...

... to all those who followed the blog and donated money. We couldn't have done it without you :)

The Final Countdown - last long run survived and only weeks to go

Not that Dad and I could ever be called pessimists (I was once described as relentlessly enthusiastic and Dad is definitely the glass-half-full type), but I think we surprised even ourselves last weekend with a final long run of 21 MILES! You may share our amazement further when you hear that the previous week Dad failed his boyhood Scouting promise to 'be prepared' and only managed 6 miles of what was meant to be a 15 mile slog. He puts this down to 'strenuous lawn-mowing and lack of bananas' - make of this what you will.

With such an unlikely precursor to our last joint training run, I can only imagine that it was the five-course 'Spring Supper' we had at The Pub the night before that gave us some extra zing in our stride, thanks Daria! Whatever it is you put in the goat's cheese souffle, I want some more.

Being the whizz that he is, Dad has put together some stats and maps of our run on Sunday, see below. Also, click the link for embarrassing pictures of me in a live-action replay.

Let the carbo-loading commence

With Simon off cuddling Buddhas in Japan for a couple of weeks it falls to me to give a little update on our marathon progress - a daunting task for someone without a first in English lit I can assure you, but hopefully my GCSE C grade will get me through.

This week I have been mostly eating ... carbs. I've heard about good carbs and bad carbs, but I have a no-discrimination policy and am welcoming stodge of every creed, colour and flavour into my life. This from someone who previously thought bread was the devil (blame Atkins) is quite something! Apparently its common to gain weight during marathon training and now I see why. And with the gov adding 20% tax onto all baked goods (see, I can do serious too) now is the time to binge!!!

With the diet side of things covered Dad and I are trying to fit in our final long-runs before 'tapering' (I am interpreting this as 2 weeks of duvet days, we don't want to get worn out now) before the big day itself. I managed a 15 miler through the idylls of Lewisham and beyond and Dad has continued to merrily skip through the Austen-like scenery of Wanstrow. Jealous much, me!?

On the fundraising side of things, a big THANKYOU to everyone that has donated so far. Every penny counts and we have a big target to achieve! Wonderful Wanstrow village got involved in a typically and brilliantly random Bavarian night in the village hall - I wonder how many themes they can come up with around booze?? Here is some photo evidence (although what it proves im not sure)

With kind thanks to Geoff Andrews for helping Voice.
From the Auction and Pledges for the Race Day we anticipate over £100 will come from the Bavarian night.
Better go before I go mad with all this blogging power.
Muchos love.

Breaking news - Steve to win the marathon?

Yes, that's right friends, hard to believe after a winter of kebabs and red wine, but our man has turned his training around and is now the name on everyone's lips as the bookies favourite to win the marathon! Please see the news story via the link below:

That juicer must be very good...

Electronic ramblings...

Right, we’ve got a lot to cover. I won’t bother with the New Year greetings as Valentine’s day has already passed (as has the new year’s hangover, finally!). Welcome back, friends! Let’s get to it…

Back in January, Steve actually stepped his distance up to 12 miles by a happy accident (well, happy in retrospect perhaps). Setting out for a leisurely 10-mile jog, our man took a wrong turning near Stoney Stratton and not even the massive pin-point GPS power of his iPhone 4 could bring him back*. Thrown back on naked human wit and cunning, Steve dodged the inevitable ‘randy bull in’ top field’ and reconnected with civilisation on the other side of the Westcombe road. In its navigational agony the iphone merely spluttered “recalculating” and showed him the nearest Starbucks within a 5-mile radius.

Rosie has been quietly racking up the miles, easing back into the running habit after the festive season and finding time to move house! Harking back to the early blog posts in October 2011, Steve has had a few more moments of Dionysian indulgence (see attached photo – sorry Dad!J) but has also purchased a new juicer – showing the classic Piscean trait of contradiction. Let’s hope the juicer wins as we move close to the 2-month countdown!

Until next time friends! And remember, you can donate to Steve and Rosie’s marathon fundraising target for Voice securely online at www.justgiving.com/steveandrosiemarathon2012

*Can someone tell me what ‘cellular towers’ are? I found it on the apple iPhone web page. Are they virtual penitentiaries you are locked up in by Apple for not paying your monthly bill?!

'Snow joke, this marathon training!

Season’s greetings!

Well, the snow may not have arrived yet but the competition should be feeling a chill down their spine as Rosie and Steve go through their exercise routines…

And, most important of all, today marks day 1 of the fundraising campaign! You can now donate online via http://www.justgiving.com/steveandrosiemarathon2012

Rosie is edging ahead in terms of distance at around 10 miles, however Steve takes the prize for variety of locations as he has been spotted running through the woods in Belgium! Wait – it all makes sense now: the frequent international travel… the bizarre love of Andy McNab stories… and now the marathon as ‘cover’ for intensive commando-style training? Readers, I am sure that Steve’s ‘Bourne’ identity cannot remain a secret for much longer…

Somewhere, along a lonely woodland trail in Belgium, Steve puts his SAS training to the test...
